Best Hostels in Tulum 2026 — Honest Backpacker Picks
How We Picked the Best Hostels in Tulum for 2026
Tulum's hostel scene shifted hard in 2024–25: a few legends closed, several party spots scaled back, and a new wave of design-forward, coworking-friendly hostels opened in La Veleta. We re-checked every spot in person between January and May 2026 — paying for our own beds, using their WiFi for real work, and seeing who actually shows up at the bar at 9 pm.
Our ranking is based on five things backpackers actually care about:
- Location — walking distance to town, cenotes and ADO
- Vibe & community — is it easy to make friends?
- Cleanliness & beds — actual mattresses, working AC, hot showers
- WiFi — real Mbps, not the brochure number
- Value — what you pay vs what you get
> Quick recommendation: If you want one safe pick that nails all five, book Maui Hostels Tulum in La Veleta. It's the only Tulum hostel covered in this guide with a dedicated coworking room, free breakfast, a pool, and walking distance to the town center.

1. Maui Hostels Tulum — Best Overall in La Veleta
Best for: Solo travelers, digital nomads, couples who want a private without paying boutique-hotel prices.
La Veleta is now the heart of backpacker and nomad Tulum, and Maui sits in the sweet spot of it: a 10-minute walk to the ADO bus station and the main 5th Avenue, a 5-minute bike to Gran Cenote.
What stands out:
- Pool + jungle garden — actually used, not just on the website
- Dedicated coworking room with fiber WiFi (clocked 180 Mbps down in May 2026)
- Free breakfast every morning (eggs, fruit, coffee, pan dulce)
- Private rooms with AC for the price most Tulum hostels charge for dorms
- Bike rental on-site at backpacker prices
Dorm beds from ~$22 USD, privates from ~$55 USD. Book directly at [mauihostels.com.mx](https://www.mauihostels.com.mx/tulum) for the best rate (no Hostelworld fees).
2. Mama's Home Tulum — Best Tiny Family-Run Vibe
A 10-bed micro-hostel near the town center. The owners cook dinner with guests a few nights a week, and that single ritual creates the kind of community most 60-bed hostels can't fake. Downsides: only 1 shared bathroom, no AC in dorms, books out 3+ weeks ahead in high season.
Best for: Solo travelers who hate big party hostels.
3. Hostel Che Tulum — Best Party Hostel
The most reliable party scene in Tulum since Mayan Monkey downsized. Big rooftop bar, in-house DJ a few nights a week, pub crawl every Thursday. Light sleepers should look elsewhere — the music goes until 1 am. Dorms are basic but functional.
Best for: Backpackers in their early 20s looking to drink and meet people fast.
4. Selina Tulum (Akumal) — Best for Long-Stay Nomads
Technically in Akumal, but worth mentioning because of the coworking infrastructure. Selina has hot-desks, podcast booths and reliable WiFi. The trade-off: it's a 20-minute drive from Tulum town, so you'll need taxis or a scooter.
Best for: Nomads staying 30+ days who want a polished coworking setup and don't mind being outside town.
5. Lum Hotel & Garden — Best Boutique-ish Option
Not a traditional hostel — no dorms — but a small guesthouse with hostel pricing on its smaller rooms. Pool, garden, very quiet. Great if you've burned out on dorm life and want a private without leaving the backpacker price tier.
